Rösträtt för kvinnor (Votes for Women), 1912–1919

The periodical was published by the Landsföreningen för kvinnans politiska rösträtt (The National Association for Women’s Suffrage). The paper’s motto was: We can never do as much for a great cause as a great cause can do for us.

The Landsföreningen för kvinnans politiska rösträtt (The National Association for Women’s Suffrage, LKPR) was founded in 1904 and during its first year the Central Board proposed that they should publish a monthly magazine. The proposal was rejected however, with reference to the economic problems of the Association and also to the fact that Dagny and Social Tidskrift (Social Magazine) already existed. In both these periodicals one could read about the suffrage discussion, among other matters. Dagny was later to publish a special issue in 1911 on account of the great Suffrage Alliance Congress in Stockholm the same year.

The matter was discussed from all points of view at the beginning of the 1900s, and in 1907 Ellen Hagen proposed that they should buy a majority of shares in a daily Stockholm newspaper. They were probably considering Svenska Folket (The Swedish People). The periodical had many employees and contributors with links to the suffrage movement and it was also at that time in a weak economic position. This proposal was not passed, however. After more years with various proposals and several discussions with Dagny it was decided in 1912 by the Central Board of the LKPR to start publishing a magazine. The magazine would appear twice monthly and the annual subscription was not to exceed one krona. The magazine was first published on March 1, 1912, with an issue of 27,000 copies. The printing costs amounted to 8 kronor for the first 3,000 copies of each issue and 8 kronor for each subsequent thousand. Elin Wägner was the first person to be suggested as editor, but for various reasons this was not possible and she recommended Elisabeth Krey instead, who thus became the first editor of the magazine. Among the contributors were Elin Wägner, Gulli Petrini, Signe Bergman, Ann Margret Holmgren and Frigga Carlberg.
