Morgonbris (Morning Breeze), 1904-1936
Morgonbris was founded in 1904 as an organ of the Women's Trade Union, since 1909 a member newspaper of the Swedish Social Democratic Women's Association. Its editors include politicians such as Anna Sterky and Anna Lindhagen, as well as journalist Kaj Andersson Morgonbris has followed the debates of the time: nuclear weapons in the 1950s, gender roles in the 60s and feminism in the 90s.
The first issue of Morgonbris (Morning Breeze) appeared in November 1904 in connection with a bazaar organised by the Kvinnornas Fackförbund (Women Workers’ Union). Its reception was positive and publication was continued, increasing first of all to 4 issues per year, and then in 1907-08 to 6 issues per year. Circulation amounted to 4,000-6,000 copies. The first editor of the periodical was Anna Sterky, and Maria Sandel gave the magazine its name.
From and including 1909, publication was taken over by the executive of the Social Democratic Women’s Congress, and the magazine became a monthly.
Since 1920, when the Social Democratic Women’s Association was founded, Morgonbris has been owned by the Association. Ever since its start, the periodical has had a vital role in the Social Democratic Women’s Association – as its face to the world, as a forum for discussion and as a bond between the members.
Between 1932 and 1936, Kaj Andersson was the editor and during her time, the periodical was modernised journalistically and typographically.
Morgonbris has been a powerful voice in social discussion and debate during the years. Many historical happenings and subjects of current importance have been discussed in it, such as women’s struggle for the right to vote at the beginning of the 1900s, and later the growing Nazi and fascist movements in the Europe of the 1920s and 1930s, the escalation of armaments and the debate about Swedish atomic weapons in the 1950s, the gender discussion and family politics during the latter part of the 1900s and on into the new Millennium.
