Ikaros Club - An archive with wings

This research project focuses on the various thematic entrypoints to the Ikaros Club's archive, in order to look at how this documentation can help us examine food heritage, art, poetry, antiquity references, and gender roles.

Ikaros Club was a educational and discussion club, founded by a number of women in the Stockholm region in the 1930s. The club was active during the next 60 years, and one of the founders Brita Ekström donated its archive to KvinnSam in 1994. The archive contains the clubs meticulous protocols between 1934-1992, bound into five volumes. These protocols contain paintings and poetry, drawings and songs, often produced by the club's talented members. Photographs, newspaper clippings, letters, and their home-produced song books have been placed throughout the protocol books, together with the paper wings created and worn by the club.

The Ikaros Club project is a collaborative project between the Center for Critical Cultural Heritage Studies (CCHS) at Gothenburg University and KvinnSam. We focus on the various thematic entrypoints to the archive, in order to look at how this documentation can help us examine food heritage, art, poetry, antiquity references, and gender rolls. The results of the project will be presented in an anthology and will be followed by a podcast episode focused on food culture and Ikaros in Matarvspodden. The project will also lay the groundwork for more interdisciplinary research projects on gender, cultural heritage, and the archives.
