Exhibition: Valhallabadet - a venue for unexpected events

Published

Architects Emma Svanberg and Benoit Maire have explored the history of Valhallabadet. Through this exhibition they invite visitors to take an architectural look at the KvinnSam archives. What unexpected treasures might be hidden in the collections, and what insights can be offered?

Kvinnor Kan

Throughout its history, Valhallabadet has hosted many events, primarily related to swimming and water sports. But at one point it also became the venue for the world’s first Kvinnor Kan (Women Can) fair, which was inaugurated in Valhallabadet’s pool hall in 1984. Christina Magnuson gave the opening speech, Queen Silvia attended, and the program featured water aerobics, opera singing, and folk music. As the highlight of the opening ceremony, Ulrika Knape performed the “dive for the future” that won her Olympic gold and silver medals in 1972 and 1976.

The exhibition features material from the 1984 fair and opening ceremony, preserved in the Kvinnor Kan archive at KvinnSam.

About the Exhibition

The exhibition is part of an ongoing dialogue about the architectural qualities of Valhallabadet. The exhibitors are Emma Svanberg and Benoit Maire, an architectural team who share a strong interest in swimming and bathing culture and are frequent visitors to Valhallabadet.
