Exhibition: For the development of body and soul, August 18 - September 19

Published

Welcome August 18th to "For the development of body and soul," an exhibition about the Women's World Games, held in Slottskoggsvallen in 1926! 100 years later, we celebrate this historic event together with the Sports Museum and a number of other actors.

The exhibition depicts the Women's World Games in Gothenburg during 1926 and is one of several activities in tandem with the 100-year anniversary of the games.

The Women's World Games took place in August of 1926 at Slottsskogsvallen in Gothenburg. The event was the result of several years of activism to establish women's sports in Sweden and internationally.

The exhibition "For the development of body and soul" depicts the gendered aspects of the games, as well as the event's connections to both the sports movement and the women's movement.

During the 1920s, it was not a given that women could or should compete. Would these sporting women be able to have children? Would then lose their "womanliness?" The exhibition sheds light on what the historian Helena Tolvhed has noted - that "the physical was political."

The exhibition lifts materials from KvinnSam's archival collections, together with a variety of physical objects from the collections of the Sports Museum in Gothenburg.

Come to the exhibition opening on August 18th at 16:30 in the Malmström room at the Humanities Library! The event is one of many planned for the 100-year anniversary; alongside there will be an exhibition at  the Sports Museum, a conference en konferens "Women's situation within sports - from pioneers to masters," and a Grand Prix track and field competition at Slottsskogsvallen.
