The KVINNSAM database

KVINNSAM is an interdisciplinary database of literature, containing references to Swedish and international research within gender studies and women’s history. The database is part of the Swedish national catalogue, Libris, and contains around 170 000 references, making it the largest database of its kind in the Nordic region.

The database is produced by KvinnSam at the Gothenburg University Library. It is based on the holdings of the Gothenburg University Library, primarily its printed materials. All materials are indexed using controlled subject headings from the KVINNSAM subject headings list, KAO (see the list further down on this page).

Search tips

All materials in the KVINNSAM database is indexed using controlled keywords from KVINNSAM's own subject headings list KAO.

The keywords are chosen from a consistent women's perspective, i.e. the keyword women is always implied. The subject word authors refers to authors who are women, the subject word police officers refers to police officers who are women. To search for the equivalent for men, :men is added to the keyword, i.e. authors: men, police officers: men. Other texts about men can be found by searching for masculinity, male role, fathers, etc.

Avoid adding the keyword gender to your searches. As the focus of the database is gender research and women's history, the keyword gender has been used sparingly.
